What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on the nervous system and general health. Chiropractic seeks not only to relieve symptoms, but to optimize health by addressing the patient complaint holistically.

Chiropractic emphasizes the natural ability of the body to heal itself and recognizes that the body's power of recuperation is affected by the nervous system. Because of this, chiropractic practice does not include the use of drugs or surgery for treatment.

Chiropractors use conservative and non-invasive treatment options which may include the use of manual treatments (usually spinal manipulation), physical therapy, the use of physiotherapy modalities such as electrical stimulation or therapeutic ultrasound, exercise, nutritional advice, orthotics, modification of daily activities, and patient education.

The goal of joint and spinal manipulation and other manual treatments is not only to improve motion and reduce pain, but to restore proper nervous system function and impact the body's ability to heal itself.

The nervous system coordinates all of the functions of the body and is composed of the brain, spinal cord, spinal nerves, and peripheral nerves. The spinal column is composed of vertebrae, that function to protect the spinal nerves. When these vertebrae are moving properly, your body can function as it was meant to and the nervous system impulses can flow freely. If the vertebrae are misaligned, or subluxated, an interruption of the nervous system occurs. This results in damage to the nerve tissue, as well as the muscles, tissues, and organs supplied by the nerve. Over time, spinal wear and tear occurs, and symptoms such as pain, swelling, stiffness, or tingling begin to develop. Unfortunately, damage is already occurring before the symptom is present.

A chiropractor is the only healthcare professional specifically trained to diagnose misalignments of the spine and correct them. When proper nervous system function is restored, your body's ability to heal itself is magnified.

"Medicine is the study of disease and what causes a man to die, chiropractic is the study of health and what causes a man to live."
